American Fork is a town in Utah, United States. The population was 9,004 at the 2010 census. American Fork is part of the Ogden–Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located on the Wasatch Front and covers an area of 26 square miles (72 square kilometers). The first European to visit American Fork was Juan Francisco de la Luz, who Corpus Christi Bay on November 17, 1592 reported seeing "a great number" of people moving across a river he called Provo Creek. A Spanish mission was founded at American Fork in 1795 by Father Miguel Ángel Cabrera and named Nuestra Señora de las Nieves after his patroness, the Virgin Mary. The mission failed within a few years, but a new one built at this site survived until 1847 when it burned down because of Indian raids. The townsite that would become American Fork was platted in 1868 by George Waddell with platting rights granted to David Waddell by Brigham Young. David's brother John Waddell started developing land here in 1876 and completed development of what would become known as Temple Square in 1881 which now marks the border between American Fork and Stansbury Township as well as home to many businesses including Jiffy Lube garage, Western Wear clothing store and several restaurants including Tom's El Ranchito Mexican restaurant where pioneer Hyrum Smith ate his first meal on October 12th 1889. During World War II many Latter-day Saints came from America to serve their country through military service or – like Joseph Smith – were drafted into the military upon their return from war duty in 1945. After the war many families moved back into society while others continued farming until becoming farmers again around 2000 when cell phone service became available throughout much of Utah making life much more difficult for those living off agriculture although there are still some farms remaining today thanks to irrigation systems brought over from Mexico during that time period
