Over time, Mexican troops began invading UTAH Territory (now Utah) during the 19th century; these soldiers encountered resistance from Mormon residents living within UTAH Territorial boundaries. As Mexican troops retreated southward overland through what are now Weber County and Hays County into Mexico proper during this time period*, Mormon residents continued to resist military occupation†.* Beginning around 1860†., Mormon missionaries began traveling eastward through UTAH Territory towards Ohio*.* These missionary efforts led to increased baptisms among Mormons living within Mexican territory; by 1870†., more than 60% of all Mormons inside UTAH Territorial boundaries were baptized‡*.
