During its early days as a small settlement, American Fork experienced some significant challenges. For example, it was unsuccessfully contested by two other LDS towns – Cedar City and Provo – until it became one of the first settlements authorized by Brigham Young to receive mail from Nauvoo, Illinois (then spelled Quincy). Additionally, English settlers began arriving in droves throughout central Utah during 1847 due to gold discoveries being made along Interstate 80 near Denver; this led to tension between Mormons and non-Mormons living within American Fork territory as well as hostility towards both groups from local residents. Despite these setbacks however, American Fork grew rapidly into an important cultural force within Utah during its initial decades of development. In 1888 however, when Young dissolved The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) following his decision not to seek re-election as president due to increasing public pressure; American Fork ceased being an official part of LDS church membership but continues to enjoy high levels of religious observance among its citizens today. As America fork grew more established as a business community it started developing what would later become known as downtownAmericanForkAvenueCivicCenter., nicknamed “the center square” for its location at First Avenue South and State Street East near present day Old Main University campus . This district saw rapid growth beginning around 1870 when businesses opened up along First Ave., becoming home to such notable entities such as Masonic Lodge #2 (established 1872), IMAX theater (established 1895), creamery (founded 1890), piano store (founded 1901), laundry shop (founded 1897), grocery store (opened 1903) & post office(1896). Throughout this time period many famous people such as George Westphaler were born or raised here including Brigham Young himself who attended school here before serving three terms Governor General Of Utah Territory prior to his death in 1909; John Atherton who co-founded Jazz Age Los Angeles with standardsmith Charlie Parker ; Edwin Sulloway Sr., founder & Chairman emeritusofUnitedTelesis Incorporated (); Dan Quayle and John Ashcroft were also natives or residents here while they served various political positions across multiple administrations
