American Fork, Utah is a town in Weber County, Utah, United States. The population was 8,926 at the 2010 census. American Fork is located on the eastern edge of the Wasatch Mountains and is bordered to the north by Zion National Park and to the east by Cedar Valley. The town lies at an elevation of 4,671 feet (1,531 meters). The first recorded mention of American Fork was in 1847 when it was called "Horseshoe Bend". The name may be derived from a nearby stream called Horseshoe Creek which empties into Cedar River about two miles west of present-day American Fork. In 1868, Mormon pioneers explored what became American Fork and named it for General David Walker's home estate in England - "Walker's Bluff" - since he had helped lead the Mormon Battalion there during their crossing over the Rocky Mountains into America. The arrival of white men began with wagon trains traveling through Weber County in 1856. By 1865, American Fork had a post office and several businesses including a millinery and cigar store. By 1870, some forty families lived here. A school was established that year but functioned only as a temporary stop on stagecoaches between Cedar City and Provo until 1886 when First Presidency President Brigham Young arrived with his family to establish Mormonism's new capital city Salt Lake City. American Fork lost much of its population due to epidemics such as smallpox that struck here intermittently throughout most of this century; however it has regained recent levels of population growth thanks largely to tourism which has drawn people here for skiing, hunting opportunities, waterfalls etc.. One reason why Americansfork retains some level of selectivity for tourists despite its relatively low quality local cuisine also contributes to its appeal: many residents are highly skilled in various aspects related to wine production or winemaking which allows them access both high-end viticulture acreage within walking distance (many vineyards are open daily), while remaining affordable enough for everyday consumption without breaking the bank outside tourist traps like Ziploc bags filled with expensive Syrahs or sparkling wines Sam Adams Lager!
