The village was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 as Cedar City and moved to its present location in 1850. The population peaked at 2,521 in 1920 but declined until it reached 1,812 at the 2000 census. There has been no significant growth since then; however, the village remains an important community for local commerce and cultural attractions.
The original homesteads on Main Street were built between 1847 and 1850 by Mormon pioneers who had come west to found a new home after being forced out of Nauvoo, Illinois during the leveling of that city by General Order No. 11 of Brigham Young as part of his revenge for what he saw as political wrong-doing by rivals within his extended family group known as The Quorum Of Twelve Apostles (later renamed The LDS Church). These pioneer families purchased land east of Cedar City on either side of Spring Creek which they named "Cedar Grove," "Canal Valley" or "Mountain View." They laid out their homes using adobe bricks made fromUtah clay and mortar favored by early Mormons because it did not corrode under moisture or air exposure like other stone materials used at that time in western United States."American Fork: History and Today" A post office was established at Cedar Grove on October 15, 1847, serving settlers who had moved there from all over eastern Utah Territory.“First Settlers arrive in America's fork” In 1850 residents east of Cedar Grove voted to become their own municipality when they petitioned county officials to do so.
According to one source circa 1840 “the people hereabouts are mostly farmers who raise corn and oats; also some blacksmiths do some work with forge & tongs….There are about 4 or 5 stores inside town Limits now…..One Hundred men votes for Mayor……All these gentlemen have their meeting places within easy walking distance each other….Some Ladies join this society too but I apprehend few ever take any active part therein actually….It will be very necessary hereafter for someone carefull enough to keep track ol' things hereabouts wil[l] we see any change…..The first meeting place near where our [Cedar Grove] House stands today was opposite Park Meadows Cemetery”.
