American Fork has a small-town atmosphere and its residents are known for their agriculture and ranching activities. The first European to visit American Fork was David Whitlock in 1822 when he and his party of Mormons traveled from Nauvoo across the Great Salt Lake to visit Brigham Young and other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Far West Station.Whitlock named the forks in Indian Creek (north) and Cottonwood Creek (south) after local landmarks near where he found them while exploring Mormon California country. The town site was platted in 1868 by John Dallmeyer as an agricultural community on land grant from President Brigham Young. Dallmeyer had been born in New York City and came to Utah Territory with Joseph Smith when he founded the LDS church in 1834. He became one of America's most successful farmers and ranchers during his lifetime; his land holdings included more than 8,000 acres (2 km²) northeast of American Fork along Cedar Mesa Road and west of Coalville Road..Dallmeyer died unmarried in 1865 at the age of 76 years; his wife predeceased him. In 1870, George Wittell laid out what is now downtown American Fork on east-west Elm Street between Court House Square south and First Ward north Streets..Wittell served as mayor from 1871 through 1889 before becoming governor following Governor James Hales' death in 1893..In 1902 Wittell's son Alfred Wittell took over management of the family farm operations which continued until 1933 when they were sold to Leland Keppel who donated them to Yale University as part of an endowment for education..After World War II American Fork experienced rapid growth as scores of veteran farmers returned home to start new farms; today's commercial enterprises include several convenience stores,, banks, restaurants,, housing developments,,anda high school

The settler movement to American Fork began in 1847 when Brigham Young and his followers journeyed from Nauvoo Illinois to Salt Lake Valley. In 1850, American Fork was founded by James Hinkley and others who had traveled from Springdale in eastern Utah Territory. American Fork's first post office opened on July 1, 1850. By 1860 the population of American Fork had grown to about 100 people and it became an incorporated town on December 5 of that year. In 1862 Mormon General Ulysses S. Grant moved his army from Council Bluffs Iowa across the Great Salt Lake into what is now Davis County after being driven out of Missouri by Confederate forces under Robert E Lee. Upon arriving in America Fork he found that its residents were supportive of him despite their lack of knowledge about him or his cause prior to arriving there. After his victory at Fallen Timbers near Cedar City Utah on November 25th 1862 General Grant ordered all inhabitants of Camp Floyd (later Provo) south along I-15 towards Cedar City where they would be interned until relieved by Union troops under General Orville Smith on January 24 1865 following the Battle Of Cedar Creek which ended the siege ofCamp Floyd
