A place where snow never snows, high mountains loom towered to the north and east, while the Wasatch Mountains stretched to the south. Alpine was founded in 1847 as a Mormon settlement on what is now Utah's eastern border by Brigham Young and his followers who were escaping religious persecution in Illinois. The town quickly became a center for LDS religion, education, and industry. By 1900 Alpine had a population of 10,000 people and was one of the largest cities in Utah. The city's economy changed during World War II when many local businesses became involved in military production. After the war Alpine declined as industries closed down and the population decreased. However, new businesses have slowly started up again since 2000 thanks to the presence of two colleges (Utah State University and Weber State University), a major hospital, several light industrial parks, and an amusement park. Alpine is located at 36°13'N 95°48'W / 36.28; -95.64E / 36.[1] It has an elevation of 4651 feet (1593 meters). As of 2010 it had a population of about 20,000 people living in 413 buildings[2]. Its climate is continental with warm winters and mild summers that average about 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius). There are no significant geographical features that can be said to make Alpine unique other than its location within some very large metropolitan areas across North America which share similar climates but offer different experiences: Salt Lake City-23 million people,[3] Denver-25 million people,[4], Chicago-25 billion people,[5], Los Angeles-30 billion people[6], etcetera In addition most places have around 100vernal events each year such as Oktoberfest or Christmas Tree lighting which add flavor but do not usually result in significant economic growth or thousands extra residents overnight!
