A large, mountainous region in the northern hemisphere, Alpine is located at an altitude of 2,000 feet (600 meters). The name comes from the Latin word alpinus meaning "mountain." The area has been inhabited by humans since at least 6500 BC. In 1812, Spanish explorers discovered and named this region after the mountains that dominate its skyline. Today, Alpine is a census-designated place (CDP) and town in Kane County, Utah, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 14,819. Alpine started as a Mormon settlement in 1847. By 1860, it had become one of the most heavily populated areas in Utah due to its fertile soil and easy accessibility to water resources. The LDS Church began irrigating crops here in the 1870s and established a livestock ranching operation here in 1912. In 1955–56, Alpine became part of Wasatch County when it was organized from portions of Logan County. It has remained an agricultural center ever since with cereal production accounting for about 60% of total output statewide during 2000–2010; however dairy production also continues to play a large role here. The first glaciation arrived in Utah around 10,000 years ago and created what is now known as the Jarman Ice Shelf along much of modern-day Alpine including parts of Kane County today. A second glaciation followed about 8500 years ago which left behind evidence throughout southeastern Utah including several small lakes that still exist today called Menard Lakes after Captain George Menard who explored them circa 1850 while on his journey from Stansbury Park eastward through Cache Valley towards Salt Lake City via Weber Valley before reaching Brigham Young’s Summit House near present day Heber City on July 24th 1852 where he reported finding “a new route across these Rocky Mountains by way of Cedar Mesa westward to Provo River” – thus beginning America’s first exploration into North America beyond Mexico/Central America starting with Forster & Humboldt Mission pilots James Clark Ross & Nathaniel Bowdoin over land grant homesteaded by Juan de Fuca over 1400 miles southwest cornering their discoveries just north off Vancouver Island

A few weeks ago, I was driving down Interstate 15 in Utah when I saw a sign that said "Alpine, Utah." The town had been founded by Mormons in the 1840s and it has since become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. Alpine is located about an hour north of Salt Lake City on State Route 128. It is known for its rich history and scenery, as well as its many attractions for tourists. The town has a population of about 1154 people and it spans three blocks wide. The first settlers to Alpine were Mormon missionaries who arrived in 1841. They built a small cabin nearby and started farming soon after. Alpine became a small community because it was convenient to other LDS congregations across the state. In 1846, Brigham Young ordered all Mormons living in Utah to move to this area or be excommunicated from the church. So, many Mormons decided to move to Alpine rather than face expulsion from their faith. Many famous people have visited Alpine over the years, including President Reagan, U2 frontman Bono, Singer Tom Petty and Willie Nelson. One of my favorite things about visiting this tiny town is how much history there is behind every building! There are nearly 50 different churches that were established within Alpine boundaries during various periods throughout its history- some dating back more than 60 years!
