Alpine, Utah is a small town located in Kane County, Utah. The population was 1,674 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Alpine was founded in 1878 by John and Hannah Greenhalgh, who named it after Mount Afton in Washington Territory. For many years, Alpine was one of the most populous towns in Kane County and even had its own post office (1896-1970). However, over time Alpine's population dwindled until it had only 724 residents as of 2000. In recent years there has been a renewed interest in Alpine due to its unique history and attractions which include a ski resort, an art museum, and numerous hiking trails. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Alpine were two brothers who came from Illinois on horseback between 1876 and 1877. They named their new settlement "Afton" for Mount Afton in Washington Territory where they had seen snowflakes fall from the sky on their way downrange from the mountains. After arriving they built themselves a log cabin and started farming the land that would later become Alpine. By 1893 there were already 100 people living in Alpine when it became county seat of Kane County with George Wigglesworth as recorder/commissioner. The community experienced some growth during World War I with many soldiers coming through to sell goods or rent rooms while they fought overseas; however this activity stopped once hostilities ended. In 1919 John Greenhalgh died leaving behind three children - Hyrum (Hank), Alma (Alma), and Orville - all of whom took over management of their father's business empire which included property holdings throughout central Utah including Aspen Grove Ranch near Provo, Box Elder Ranch south of Logan, North Ridge Reservation east of Weber City and Cottonwood Springs Resort west of Park City which are still operated today by descendants of those original families members! In 1924 Hank Greenhalgh married Arlene Peckham who gave birth to four daughters: Karen (Shelley), Julie (Judy), Stacy (Stephanie)and Lisa (Lisa). One Year later Alma married Reuben Jenson also from Illinois making her kinfolk also from that state! subsequently within ten years all five sisters were married into brasseries- griffiths- jackson- lee! This wedding resulted in the addition another branch to the family tree when Arlene’s sister Lois became pregnant with her fourth daughter Laura Jean Jenson Burke]. In 1933 Donny Youngblood purchased Aspen Grove Ranch having heard about its potential for development along US 191 northbound out towards Wasatch Mountains National Park; he quickly realized how important this location would be for skiing & outdoor activities being situated directly below Heavenly Ski Resort!! youthful optimism continued through his ownership culminating with construction beginning onAspen Grove Racetrack doing away with need for a separate garage & driving range just outside town limits!! Today much remains unchanged such as Aspen Grove Racetrack’s signature red track running parallel to Main Street thru downtown ☀️
Alpine, Utah was founded in 1847 and is the oldest settlement in the Salt Lake Valley. The town was named for two mountains in nearby Colorado, Alpine Peak and Butte of the Holy Mountain. In 1850, a post office was established at Alpine and it remained in operation until 1907. The first settler in what is now Alpine was John H. Bickerton who arrived on July 3, 1847.
