In the early 1800s, Alpine was a small farming community located in what is now Utah. The area was first settled by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and quickly became a stop on the Pony Express network. In 1870, Alpine had 1,500 residents and boasted an Italianate-style Catholic Church and a laundry facility. By 1920, Alpine had grown to over 10,000 residents and employed over 150 people at its two schools. It also boasted an A&P grocery store, movie theater, post office, gas station and convenience store. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Alpine experienced a rapid growthrate due to its ties to the oil industry. By 1972 it had reached its current population of 2300 with 100 businesses including two banks (the Provo National Bank & Trust Company and Utah Valley National Bank), 12 churches (St John’s Episcopal Church & First Presbyterian Church), three hospitals (One Health Medical Center - which merged into Adventist Health Care in 1987) and six shopping malls (Alpine Shopping Center - which merged into Northlands Mall in 1984), as well as four universities: Weber State University; Utah Valley University; Brigham Young University; and USU. The town continued to grow during the 1980s through annexation of adjacent towns such as Orem by 1984. Today Alpine has over 30 businesses with 2200 residents including 375 companies making it one of the most vibrant communities within ten miles of Salt Lake City

Alpine, Utah is a small town located in Tooele County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Alpine is one of several towns in Tooele County that are served by Alpine School District No. 4. The first settler to arrive in what is now Alpine was George Atherton in 1867 and he named it after his home town of Ascot in England. In 1870, Wm Hite settled here also and he named the place "Hite's Bluff." Atherton and Hite were among the earliest settlers who made outriggers on what are now known as Cottonwood Creek andorganized a post office here on March 9, 1871. The post office was discontinued on May 15th, 1872 because noone wanted to carry mail from this remote location. In 1865 John Capps came across the country from where he had come earlier that year and started trading with local Native Americans including the Paiute Indians. He built a cabin near present day Cottonwood Creek which became his starting point for his Trading Post business venture called "the Capps Store." After some time Capps decided to move his store further up stream so as not to be disturbed by seasonal floods caused by winter rains runoff from nearby Snowy Mountains National Park. His store continued to serve this purpose until about 1903 when a new store building was erected west of current day State Route 191 north of Cottonwood Creek Dam & picnic area (site of today's ski resort). When it closed its doors for good it remains one of few businesses permanently closed within Alpine boundaries during those early years when most people only traveled through temporary stores or stopped at their homes for supplies during summertime before traveling back into the mountains again Apatheia Banknote Company opened its doors in nearby Provo on October 12th 1889 just south of where State Route 191 meets Interstate 80 northeast of present day Cottonwood Creek Dam (site today of American Fork) making Alpine one of very first US cities served by an banknote company In 1904 James Fenton arrived from Logan UT moving with his family downriver along what is now State Route 191 towards what would become their future home at mile marker 121st Street & Milford Road NW they began farming land which they would later subdivide and develop into Overland Park When White Settlement Act passed Congress providing federal lands east of the Great Salt Lake Valley for white settlement many families searching for land selected this area including those associated with Fenton family who had purchased government rights to nearly all remaining acreage eastward beyond Provo River Valley thus becoming known as "The Overlanders" and opening up over 6000 acres more than any other group directly involved
