Alpine, Utah is a town in Carbon County, Utah, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the mountain range that surrounds it. Alpine is located on U.S. Route 191 and is about 15 miles east of Cedar City. The first people to live in what is now Alpine were the Paiutes who lived there for over 10,000 years before moving to central Utah in the early 1800s. In 1847, Brigham Young came to know about this area and decided to make this his new homebase for his group of missionaries he was leading westward into the Great Basin (and potentially into Mexico). It wasn't until after Mormon pioneers had arrived some five years later that they realized they needed a place to store their goods so they could continue their journey eastward and help build up Zion Valley as an LDS temple site. Accordingly, on July 16, 1850 President James K. Polk issued a proclamation authorizing $5 per acre (the equivalent of $ in 2009) be given in gold prospectors' shares “for exploration or settlement” within 100 miles of Salt Lake City by those who found significant amounts of gold near Weber Canyon and North Temple Hills; this land eventually became Wasatch Front National Park (now part of Bryce Canyon National Park). This led to what would become known as "The Gold Rush" because many people rushed headlong into these new surroundings because they saw an opportunity for rich profits from mining claims that had yet to be developed…or discovered! While much has changed since then – such as development along US 191 – Alpine still remains a small but thriving community with several churches and schools, including one high school which relocated from Provo in 1984 following racial tension there during the Olympics Trials period when African Americans were being barred from competition at certain events due to concerns about possible boycott by white supremacists! Additionally, nearby Cedar City continues to grow rapidly with its new breweries and bars joining forces with Alpine's numerous grocery stores over recent years – helping give residents plenty of choices while also boosting local economies!

Alpine became an incorporated town on March 25, 1907. In 1958, Alpine merged with nearby Clearfield to form one municipality. Meyer Road ran through both towns and continues as a main street today between them. The two towns had different economies until they merged; Alpine developed heavy industry while Clearfield focused on agriculture and tourism. Alpine has several museums including the Utah State Capitol Museum and Museum of Art which is open year round and features works by American artist Grant Wood

By 2002, however, Alpine had begun to experience significant decline due to population loss and economic stagnation.
