In 1902, Alpine was incorporated as a city within Kane County. The population grew rapidly during World War I due to military production located there including munitions plants at Cottonwood Arsenal (now known as Cannon Beach) and Northrop Air Force Base. With development came growth problems such as overcrowding in schools and streets that led to the creation of a zoning ordinance in 1922 limiting building heights to one story or less for single-family homes only; this ordinance has been repealed several times since its inception but remains an important part of local history. Alpine experienced rapid growth following enactment of an act that gave city status to all unincorporated areas within Kane County with a population over 5,000 residents by 1935; this allowed for more apartment construction which resulted in increased traffic congestion on streets near downtown Provo and other neighborhoods around town. A series of hills near downtown caused some streetcars running along University Avenue between Royce Street/Alpine Boulevard (then called Main Street)and Logan Boulevard (later Valley Boulevard)to be derailed when drivers tried unsuccessfully to cross them while ascending early morning ascent from nearby Winter Quarters eastward into downtown Provo

The population of Alpine peaked at around 10,000 in the 1800s but slowly began to decline as a result of natural disasters such as earthquakes and drought. Today, only a handful of people live in Alpine and it is considered an historic ghost town. However, there are some interesting aspects to its history that deserve attention. For example, Alpine was chosen as the site for what is now called "The Great Salt Lake Valley Expedition" by Brigham Young because it offered easy access to water supplies and ample grazing land for livestock. Furthermore, it also served as a staging ground for other Mormon expeditions into southern Utah during this time period.
Alpine, Utah was one of the original towns in Storey County, Utah. The first post office at Alpine was established on December 3, 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on October 15, 1911. The first settler in Alpine was John A. Haight.
