Wylie is a small town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Piney Woods Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Wm. H. Clements in 1887 and named after him. The first post office opened in 1888 and the first store was built in 1889. Wylie has been occupied by white people since 1887 when Scotsman William Hannon set up a grocery store there with five barrels of oil he had acquired from an Indian chief. A post office was established here on November 10, 1888, and mail service began operations on December 1, 1888. Hannon's store closed in 1893 but his son John Denton reopened it as the first J Denton Hardware Store in 1895; this business continued until 1935 when it became known as the Red Roof Inn & Suites (now Marriott). In 1903, Harry Wright bought the hardware store and renamed it Wylie Hardware & Pipe Works (later renamed Wright Trading Post). In 1904 Harry Wright married Lillie Mae Powers; they raised six children there before moving to Palestine, Kansas where Harry started another hardware business which lasted until his death in 1971. In 1936 J Fitts opened a general merchandise store next door to Red Roof Inn & Suites which became known as Fry's General Store followed by Fitts Tire Shop before closing down around 1990(?). At that time all of the businesses were combined into one entity - Fry's Sporting Goods which continues to operate today as part of Walmart Supercenter at 8601 FM 620 West near Interstate 30 In 1953 Winfield Scott made some land available for development here on what is now north side of I-30 and named it "Wylie". The town platted its new boundaries including parts of Arlington Heights and Pines View so that Wylie could become an incorporated municipality complete with streets, civic buildings and other amenities typically associated with municipalities along urban areas such as Dallas or Houston . On January 1st 1959 Wylie became fully independent from Arlington Heights under ordinance No 5291 passed by a vote of 4-1 . Incorporation took place on February 3rd 1959 with Mayor Easley presiding over proceedings . Services were provided through City Council meeting agendas while law enforcement handled all criminal activity On July 26th 1966 Floodwaters destroyed most of downtown Wichita Falls during Hurricane Agnes making landfall just west of here taking most everything within 15 miles east along I-35W including Wichita Falls Marketplace , KFC , Exxon Mobil station and many homes By 1970 retail stores had reopened but almost all businesses closed due to high taxes levied against them following years of economic recession caused by OPEC embargo

Wylie, Texas is a small town located in Hood County, Texas. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Wylie is named after Augustus Wright and his brother Samuel Wylie. The Wrights were settlers in what is now Hood County in 1845. They built a log cabin on the bank of the Trinity River. In 1847, Augustus Wright married Mary Ann Welsh and they bought 640 acres (246 hectares) of land near present-day Wylie from Edwin Harker for $4 per acre ($48 per hectare). The Wrights raised cattle, hogs, horses, and deer there until their death in 1953. In 1951, they bequeathed their remaining land to the state of Texas as part of the General Land Grant Act of 1850 (). The first post office in Wylie was established on October 12th, 1851 (). It served as an important connection between Hood County residents and nearby Austin before it closed its doors in 1865. The last post office opened on February 14th, 1907 (). Today only a few scattered remnants of early pioneer life remain—a cemetery with unmarked graves dating back to 1830; an old schoolhouse; and a few farmhouses—but these contribute importantly to local history by revealing insights into how early Texans lived and thought about their environment. In 1862 General John Custer's Rangers settled around present-day Wylie after being ordered by Confederate Brigadier General Robert Ewell to march through Hood County looking for supplies following the Battle of Antietam Creek that August
