By 1920, however, commerce had long since replaced agriculture as Wylie's primary focus; after World War II it saw only a few sporadic inflow of residents until it lost its status as a major city in the 1970s when suburbanization began to take hold across much of central Texas.
Wylie, Texas was founded in 1879 by elements of the Latter Day Saint movement. The town was named for Apostle Wylie C. Smith and built on the site of an old mission station. The town quickly became a center for the LDS faith and its citizens developed a strong sense of community. They also enjoyed harvesting local crops such as corn, beans, and cotton. In 1915, Wylie became the county seat of Winkler County after it was moved from Pampa to that location.
