The community was founded in 1892 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother Edwin G. Robertson as a cotton plantation for the European settlers in what is now Dallas County. In 1901, Wylie's first post office opened, and it continues to serve today with a population of around 100 residents. In 1907, oil began to be drilled in nearby Parker County and local entrepreneur James Harshbarger developed an asphalt plant near Wylie to take advantage of the new fuel source. By 1911, Wylie had become known as "the Hub of Oil Country". The town experienced rapid growth during World War II when war production increased from munitions manufacturing to trucking and other transportation needs; however, after the war ended in 1945, business Coolidge declined until the early 1970s when diversification into numerous service industries led to an increase in housing values and revived downtown businesses including a bank (First National Bank), restaurant (Cuba Libre), convenience store (Pepsi Maxx), health club (Apex Health & Fitness), and hotel (Sheraton). A major fire destroyed most of downtown on November 3rd, 2009 which stopped development momentum but left much property still vacant while redevelopment took place throughout 2010-2013 resulting in an overall revival of downtown businesses that has seen new construction along Elm Street/Highway 452 between Main Streets South and North including several restaurants/bars along Elm Street/Highway 452 which are now occupied by various businesses such as banks/credit unions etc...
