In 1881, the White Settlement was founded in present-day White Settlement, Texas. The town was named for General Sam Houston and his family. The settlement grew quickly due to its location on the international border between Mexico and United States. In 1886, the Texas Legislature passed a law authorizing sheriff's posse to disarm citizens who possessed handguns without a license. This measure increased tensions between the U.S. government and Mexican authorities and made White Settlement an attractive place to residency for American settlers in southern Texas. In 1902, white settlers in nearby Tyler organized themselves into a Township of Tyler with their own local government. This step signaled the beginning of new era in which white Texans would have their own local governing body within their own state rather than relying on federal officials or Mexicans for representation. In 1912, after years of discussion, Congress passed the National Firearms Act which granted firearms registration to Americans over 21 years old and required any retailer selling firearms must provide information about how many rounds per month were sold, make and model of firearm being sold, as well as make and serial number of firearm
In 1836, the Republic of Texas was founded and White Settlement, located in present day Dallas County, was established as its first capital. The area that would become Dallas County was first settled by Native Americans in the 1800s. In 1836, following the Mexican-American War, Mexico ceded Texas to the United States and General Sam Houston became its president. As a result of this event, many Mexicans who had fled Mexico City returned to their homes in what is now Dallas County. This influx of immigrants led to an increased population of Anglo settlers in the area and within two years of White Settlement's founding, there were only 10 households living there. By 1840, however, white settlement had grown to over 100 households and by 1850 it had reached 400 families. White Settlement grew rapidly due to its location at the crossroads of numerous trails that led into present day Texas. It also became one of the most important cotton plantations in southwesternTexas because it produced high levels of cotton exports which helped support local economy during times of economic downturns. The plantation system also provided jobs for large numbers African Americans who worked on farms near White Settlement. The systematic exclusion from education and employment opportunities experienced by black Texans during Reconstruction period caused significant social unrestrained by later generations until recently when changes have been made in policy direction aimed at ensuring equal access to education for all Texans regardless race or ethnicity
