In 1871, the White Settlement was founded in what is now Texas. The settlers were white men who had fled coastal slave states and came to build a new life in the Lone Star State. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had fought in the American Revolution and then served as President of Texas from 1836-1845. In 1865, Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which gave free land to people who lived near the Mexican border. This led to a series of conflicts between Texans and Kansas farmers over property rights. In 1870, a group of Texans called themselves the "Rifles" formed a militia to protect their ranching interests. They became known for their use of soft guns – such as shotguns and pistols – instead of hardguns like rifles. The White Settlement grew steadily during the 1870s and 1880s, thanks to its location on an open plain near Wichita Falls (then spelled Willits) and its easy access to transportation routes. The settlement continued growing until World War II when it decreased significantly due to changes in demographics and warfare in nearby Mexico City. In 1848, the United States acquired Texas through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which gave most of what is now California and Arizona to Mexico. As a result, White Settlement became part of new Mexico City. In 1861, when Confederate troops invaded Texas, most of the white settlers fled to outside Missouri or Arkansas. A small group stayed behind and formed a resistance movement against Confederate rule. The resistance eventually collapsed, and many Whites were killed or enslaved by Confederate forces. After the war ended, most Texans decided that they did not want any part of another Mexican government. Some people returned to White Settlement but soon abandoned it because there was no hope for prosperity under Mexican rule again. Today only a few buildings remain from early White Settlement in central Austin.
