The White Settlement, Texas region was first settled by the Texans in 1835. The area became part of the United States in 1846.
In 1836, the Mexican government ceded Texas to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The area now known as Texas was thenuninhabited and covered by a “wilderness” that stretched from what is now east-central Oklahoma to central California. The land was mostly uninhabitable because of thesevere weather conditions and lack of water resources. The first white people to set foot in present-day Texas were prospectors who journeyed into what is today eastern Oklahoma in 1839. They named their new land San Antonio del Rio de Texcoco after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, leader of Mexico during its independence from Spain. A group of Englishmen who had explored Central America in 1821 discovered an open area near modern day Austin, Texas, which they named Rancho De Flores ( rancho for “land grant”). In 1827, Governor Manuel Armijo granted this land to two friends: José Maria Elizondo and Bartolomé de las Casas y Peralta. Las Casas became president of Mexico in 1830 and ordered Don Fernando Mirabal y Costilla, governor of Veracruz, to explore possible sources of water for Mexicali Bay. After interviewing many potential settlers, Mirabal determined that only white men could live on this property so he sent back word asking those interested in purchasing it not to come forward until he had located a more suitable location. On July 6, 1835, Don Fernando Mirabal y Costilla found a site on the Gulf Coast about halfway between Galveston and Houston that would eventually become Corpus Christi (present day San Antonio) and White Settlement (later called Brazos County). On July 9th Mirabal submitted his report on the site to President James Kenedy for approval before beginning construction himself with his brother José Moreno at one endand Manuel Armijo at the other. It will be remembered that although taco stands are still common all throughout Cameron County today duelling anglers vying for just a few pieces each catches from whateversized fish are being taken there were no such things as fishing licenses or permits back then! It seems kindof crazy when you think about it now but back then there wasn't evenfishing license requirements for most states! Just show up with your catch(s) & you're good to go! Although initial development was slow due largely to lack of funding it soon picked up pace with donations from entrepreneur Sam Houston Sr., nephew Tomball Harris Jr., brothers John Marshall Johnson & Gideon Welles & others among others helping finance Roads/Buildings etc needed for settlement includingFarms/Ranches etc . White Settlement rapidly grew becomingthelargest town in East Texas by 1840 With over 10M people living there By 1850 all white settlements had been disbanded except White Settlement which continued under military occupation

SomeTexans chose to fight for the Confederacy rather than give up their land to Mexicans; others decided to move west and make new homes in what is now Central Texas. A few thousand Texans stayed put and fought on both sides until 1865 when the Union victory at Appomattox Court House ended Reconstruction in Texas. From then on, race would play a significant role in the development ofTexas; while many black Texans remained within the borders of their original communities (Houston being an exception), whites continued to dominate politics, business, education and cultural life.
The first white settlers in what is now Texas were the Comanche and Kiowa Apaches. The first European to permanently settle in what is now Texas was Juan Rodriguez de la Faja, who founded San Antonio in 1718. In 1836, Capt. James K. Polk led a force of U.S. soldiers across the Rio Grande and into Mexico to claim land for the United States as part of the Mexican-American War. As a result of this war, many Texans came north to join forces with General Santa Anna and fight against American troops. This area became known as White Settlement because most of the new colonists were white people from Northern America who had come to trade goods with Mexico and purchase land in what is now Texas.
