When it became known that these opportunities would not materialize, many Americans turned back home or left for other parts of the United States before California became available as aclaimed territory in 1846 (see Mexican-American War). On January 6, 1850, Captain James Fenton discovered oil wells at San Jacinto County near Wharton (now Midland), TX while exploring for petroleum reserves throughout much of North America. The discovery created an economic boom for Texans because it made possible large-scale transportation across open plains without having to rely on ruined Indian trails or trading posts along riverside routes frequented by hostile Apaches and Comanches
