There is no question that White Settlement was a major center of optical technology and innovation in the early Texas Republic. The town was founded by Anglo-Saxon settlers in 1836, after the Mexican-American War, as a commercial center for cattle drives and mineral extraction. By 1850, with the opening of the San Antonio Railroad, White Settlement had become an important transportation hub on the Texas Plains. Aided by its location on two of the best routes across the continent for goods entering and leaving Texas, White Settlement became one of the most important "backbone" towns in Americana during this time period. Not only did it serve as an industrial center for local farmers and ranchers; but also it played an important role in technological development - both through its production of glassmaking tools and textiles; and also through its adoption of new technologies including photography, telescope manufacture, railroad signalling systems, and air circulation systems. As recently as World War II, White Settlement continued to be a vibrant community with active industry and commerce. However, following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 - which eliminated much of Japan's remaining optical industry -White Settlement began to lose its significance as a manufacturing center within America.
