In 1836, the Texas Rangers led by Captain John F. Smith captured and killed Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna in what is now San Antonio, Texas. Santa Anna was wanted for treason against Mexico and he was hanged at Fort Sam Houston. As a result of this event, many Texans decided to settle in what is today British Columbia, Canada. One of the first settlers in what is now Texas was James White. He arrived from Virginia with his family in 1836 and soon started trading goods with the local Mexica people. After a year or so, White realized that he needed more land to farm and so he bought 640 acres of Rancho Milpas (now Milpas County) from José Páez de la Hoz. White's settlement grew quickly and by 1840 it had a population of 350 people. The first buildings were logs built on dirt platforms near the present day town of Waco, which then consisted only of a few homes. The first store opened in 1841 and soon there were three churches, four schools, two stores and several hundred cattle that White drove to market each week. In 1842 White founded the town of Waco on land that he had acquired from Páez de la Hoz. During these early years inTexas white settlement was an Anglo-Saxon enterprise controlled by men who were interested primarily in making money rather than caring for their community or region as did Hispanic settlers later on

The first permanent white settler in Texas was Isaac Parker, who founded a ranch near present-day Fort Worth in 1827. After successful campaigns against Mexican forces throughout central Texas, Santa Anna ordered his army to march on Austin and conquer it. Austin's defenders repelled the invasion and later expelled Santa Anna from Texas. This event is known as the Battle of San Jacinto (1846). A large number of Anglo-Saxon Texans followed López de Santa Anna into Mexico after their defeat at San Jacinto. They established themselves along the Rio Grande River in what is now El Paso County and nearby Ciudad Juárez Municipality. These Texans formed a new society based on free enterprise and individualism that flourished for some time before being overwhelmed by Mexican socialism during the 19th century. During this period of Spanish rule overTexas, many native Texan tribes were subjugated or wiped out by Spanish colonists – such as the Apache people – while others managed to survive until they merged with various Hispanic groups throughout much of North America during this era (e.g., Samoans). Many Native Texan families also emigrated northward during this period; these new arrivals constituted one of history's largest waves of migration ever seen in American history (the Great Plains Migration was even larger).
