The first white families arrived in 1841 when 1,500 Scots-Irish joined forces with 300 Texans led by General Sam Houston (the future president) in an attemptto create a independent colony near Austin. However, due to political instability within Mexico following President Santa Anna’s coup d’état in 1846 (which saw him install his own son as president), no new settlements were established until after the US Civil War when Republican forces drove Santa Anna out of power and restored federal government representation throughout much of Central America including Texas. After Reconstruction ended in 1865 with the end of US slave ownership across all southern states except California (where black slavery continued until 1865), many Anglo-Saxon Texans decided they did not want any part of Reconstruction or post-Civil War America. They began looking for ways back home where they could be self-sufficient again without needing help from Washington D C . In 1870 – 72 alone, more than 2 million acres were sold north of the Rio Grande River by Anglo-Texans looking for land that would be free from Indian control or tribute payments owed them by their Indian neighbors. One such group was led by John Wesley Powell who purchased land at San Antonio de Bexar County line on January 15th 1870 (). At this point there were only about 350 Anglo-Americans living permanently outside Arkansas/National City area while another thousand lived transiently throughout West Texas etc., primarily through ranching operations or leasing properties from Mexicans.) This period during which large numbers (> 5000*) Anglo Americans migrated southward constitutes what has been called “The Great Migration” AKA The Texan Boom
