This area eventually became known as White Settlement because most of its inhabitants were white British colonists from England who had recently migrated to America. The first white settler at White Settlement was John Ballou, who arrived in 1836. What followed was an era of constant growth and development for White Settlement. A school system was created soon after Ballou's arrival; a courthouse and jail were built; and roads were built leading into the community from surrounding rural areas. In 1840, White Settlement also completed its first store - one which sat on what is now Main Street - and started to become known as a center for commerce and culture in southeastern Texas.
