In 1836, the Republic of Texas was formed from the Mexican territory of New Mexico. The new state needed a capital, and Austin became its temporary capital. In April of that year, the Texas House of Representatives elected James Fenton as the first governor of Texas. Fenton decided to move the capital to Dallas, but on May 1st, 1836, a group led by Sam Houston rebelled against Fenton and moved the capital back to Austin. The rebellion quickly escalated into a full-blown war with Mexico. By October, Houston had taken control of much of central Texas and was threatening Austin. On November 15th, 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna succeeded Santa Anna as president of Mexico and ordered Houston be put down. With support from Britain and France (the United States was then at war with Spain), López de Santa Anna marchedHouston back to Austin in December 1836 and reinstated Fenton as governor. The end result for Texans was not what they had hoped for: their new capital was too far away from any key military installations; furthermore, it lacked much infrastructure such as schools or hospitals. However, since AUSTIN WAS THE CAPITAL OF TEXAS BECAUSE IT WAS THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT FORRAWING MONEY FROM MEXICO TO BUY THESE ACTIVITIES AND SUPPORT THE NEW STATE DICTATORSHIP (1845-1846), WHITE SITUATION IN TEXAS HISTORY IS RELATED TO THIS TIME period primarily through this issue
