At this point, most of White Settlement's residents left for what would become Houston County. Some remaining residents Continuously operated trade stores and churches until around 1870 when general prohibition began to take hold in Texas. After prohibition ended in 1907, white settlement declined rapidly due to economic problems caused by changing demographics and competition from other areas within Southwestern United States that had introduced prohibition sooner than them. By 1915 only 10 percent of White Settlement's original inhabitants remained living there; most had moved to other parts of Texas or northern Mexico during Prohibition's heyday.

White Settlement, Texas was a land grant in the Mexican state of Coahuila and Tejas to John White. The grant was made on November 3, 1836, based on his prior military service in the Texan Army during the Mexican-American War. White settled the area around what is now Waco, Texas, which included present-day McLennan County. He named the settlement after himself and deposited $5,000 with the Mexican government as part of a peace treaty following that war. In 1840, White sold his holdings to James Fenton. Fenton laid out Waco into an early city block plan and developed it into an important commercial center for southern Texas. By 1850, Waco had become one of the largest cities in Texas. In 1860, white men from nearby Fort Worth founded another town called Arlington Heights near what is now downtown Dallas; Arlington Heights became a major U.S. city in 1870 when it incorporated as Dallas). The land grants that were granted to White settlers gave them control over their own rural communities for centuries afterwards; these community organizations continue to exist today as "white settlements" or "whiteaker towns".
