WestUniversityPlaceHospital becameUTHealthHoustonMedical Center in 1998 when it merged with Houston Methodist Incorporated. West University Place was a small town in Midland, Texas that was founded in 1885. The community was named after West Point, New York, the headquarters of the Union army during the American Civil War. The original buildings were a Methodist church and a school. In 1924, the town lost its charter and became an unincorporated community. By 1960, only a few remaining homes remained in the town. In 1978, West University Place was dissolved by order of the Texas Legislature as part of the state's efforts to reduce government funding for unincorporated communities.
