West University Place is a city in Denton County, Texas, United States. The population was 18,557 at the 2010 census. It straddles the border of Denton and Tarrant Counties. The area that would become West University Place was settled by farmers in 1871. The first post office was established in that year, and the name of the town changed to West University in 1915 after it was annexed into Denton County. In 1925, the Texas Legislature renamed Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex (the current name) after then-Governor James K. Hughes of Texas. At that time, West University Place consisted of only a few small streets and homes within what is now downtown Dallas. By 1930, all but one block of Main Street had been developed as part of downtown Dallas with high-rise buildings and shopping malls such as Gartner's department store on one side and a train station on the other. During World War II, much of downtown Dallas was destroyed by bombing raids from Japanese planes during the war's early stages. However, most people were able to rebuild quickly thanks to government support programs like lendlease which gave businesses short term loans while they rebuilt their infrastructure; this helped keep many businesses open even when other industries were closed down due to wartime production shortages or lack of materials. Downtown Dallas experienced another boom during the late 1960s through 1970s as newly built suburban neighborhoods continued growing adjacent to downtown whileDallas chose not to annex further eastward into Tarrant County (taking neighboring Ballpark Village with it).
