West University Place is a city in Ellis County, Texas, United States. The population was 10,887 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first West University Place was organized in 1887 as an agricultural community on what is now the east side of I-35E. By 1912, it had developed into a town with a population of 9,000 people. The name "West University Place" originated from its location within the West Texas Agricultural and Mechanical College (WTWAC) campus boundaries. WTWAC merged with Baylor University in 1915 and became Baylor–Texas School of Medicine; however, West University Place retained its own name until 1921 when it united with nearby Round Rock to become Austin's second city. On January 1, 1924, Austin annexed all of Travis County including West University Place; this made Austin the largest city in Texas and gave it exclusive control over west Side streets within its limits. With the annexation came increased business and development opportunities for west Side residents while still letting east Side residents live without feeling like they were being sacrificed. In 1929 City council decided to change the original name from "Austin" to "WestUniversityPlace" for reasons having to do with growing pains associated with annexing more territory into an already burgeoning metropolis such as Austin: "[...]the original choice for 'west side' neighborhood [had] been Gray Oaks because that was where most people lived on that side of I-35E during those early days [...] It had been thought better not to give too much away unnecessarily." Today almost all east Side residents have left or are moving out due to skyscraper construction taking up valuable real estate space on their blocks or lack thereof affordable housing options
