However, because this location served as both the county seat and center of government for much of centralDallas County, development quickly spread throughout what are today parts of downtownDallas and MidtownDallas - including portions of what are now East EndHouston and GreenwayHouston - as well as outlying neighborhoods such as Willowbrook Center and Forest Hills . The first church built in what is today West University Place was Dutch Reformed Protestant which evolved into First Baptist Church which opened its doors on July 4th 1865 . The community rapidly grew with more than 20 businesses opening up along Elm Street between Trinity Avenue/Avenue Q & Temple Road by 1870 . By 1890 over 60%of Travis County's population lived within one mile (1 km) of either downtown or MidtownDallas . In 1886 an addition to First Baptist Church called "Nativity"was dedicated , serving both worshipers inside and outside while also holding classes for children until 1912 when school moved indoors due to construction on Starrett Drive adjacent to campus . This structure still stands today next door to First Baptist Church across Elm Street from NorthPark Mall

The current buildings that stand today on West University Place were designed by architect Alfred Price in 1924-1927 and are called Price Tower (now part of Rice University). These buildings are significant not only because they are among the earliest examples of Modern architecture in Texas but also because they represent a unique blend of both Spanish Colonial Revival and American Craftsman styles which blended together to create an unrivaled example of Post-World War II modern architecture in North America West University Place experienced many changes throughout its history including multiple name changes (Houston Ranch School District #1; Western Heights School District #2; East Side Elementary Schools #1 through #3; First Baptist Church School District No 1) as well as annexation by other municipalities (Houston Township; Brazoria County - Midtown Annexation); however, it has always been home to many notable people including Texans such as Senator Phil Gramm and Governor Rick Perry .

West University Place served as the original campus of Texas A&M University. It was founded in 1876 by John S. Austin and J.B. Lubbock, two of the early figures in Texas A&M's history. The first building on West University Place was the Agricultural Building, which became the university's main residence hall in 1911. In 1916, Texas A&M bought land adjacent to West University Place and built its current campus there.
