On December 2, 1881, the first successful rifle shot in history was fired from a cannon on the campus of Texas A&M University. The rifle was developed by Professor Samuel Colt and his team at the American Arms Company in Westbury, New York. In 1934, Reginald F. Kilgore became president of Texas A&M University and ordered an expansion of the university's gun range. On October 14, 1935, Kilgore also authorized the purchase of 100 rifles for use on the university's property. The university continued to purchase firearms through its Pistol Club until 1971. In that year, guns were prohibited on campus and students were required to get permits from the dean of Students before carrying any firearms onto or off campus. In 1978, Texas A&M University upgraded their existing rifle range to include a Marksmanship Chapel which served as a training ground for cadets and other university-sponsored shooting events until it was closed in 1999 following Hurricane Floyd.
West University Place is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The early growth of West University Place took place around the turn of the 20th century as students from nearby Baylor University attended classes at Sam Houston State Teachers College (now Prairie View A&M University). In 1916, Waco businessman and civic leader H.B. "Doc" Shepherd donated land to Baylor for use as a campus. The first building on the site was leased to Baylor in 1917 and completed in 1918. The first class of Baylor students enrolled at West University Place on October 6, 1918. In 1928, Waco businessmen Jock Sutherland and Harry Cramer donated land to Baylor for another campus that would eventually become West University Place School District #1 (later renamed Eastwood Independent School District #1). On July 1, 1932, Waco banker Edward Biddle donated money to establish Baylor Law School which became one of the largest law schools in the country. That same year Baptist pastor Revs John Pemberton and Sidney Pemberton founded First Baptist Church of WestUniversityPlace with assistance from their father-in-law Dr Jock Sutherland Sr.. Reverend Sidney Pemberton served as interim pastor until he could be appointed permanent pastor by then- bishop James Tabor on October 15th 1933 after Rev John's death; his brother Rev Jesse Pemberton succeeded him at that time On November 14th 1953 Brazos Valley High School opened its doors after years of planning by Mrs Myrtle Byrd and her girls' basketball team led by Vida Gooding along with other faculty members including Miss Pearl Garner who would later become headmaster In 1957 construction began on what would become Tower Center Drive which provided a new shopping mall with over 100 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Kmart Corporation and May Department Stores In 1970 Tower Center Drive was renamed Lamar Boulevard following completion of renovation work done by contractor Laird Construction Company . That same year tower center drive also became home to Brazos Valley Junior/Senior High School

The West University Place area in Austin, Texas is a history rich community that has seen many changes over the years. The original small town of West University Place was founded in 1875 by Scotsmen who arrived in the area to settle land near what is now UT Austin. The town grew quickly and soon became known for its fine schools andResidents were primarily farmers and ranchers. In 1901, the city of Austin was founded within the boundaries of West University Place. Shortly thereafter, the town changed its name to Austin and developed into a busy commercial center with several large businesses. In 1923, the United States Postal Service established an office at 10th Street and State Road 620 (later renamed 12th Street), which remain today as part ofAustin's Post Office district. In 1950,West University Place began to experience rapid growth as students moved into the area to attend universities including UT Austin, Texas A&M University, and Baylor College of Medicine. In 1957,the City Council voted to rename West University Place after former President Dwight D. Eisenhower because he had played a significant role in creating UT Austin and helping make Austin one of America’s most celebrated cities. Today, much of West University Place remains unchanged from when it first came under development more than 100 years ago - including its quiet streetscape complete with classical Revival style homes dating back to 1875; its thriving commerce; and its rich history that has been documented firsthand through various preserved buildings and records along Interstate 521 between downtown Austin and South Congress Avenue."
