When the town of West University Place was founded in 1887, it was a small farming community. The population consisted of only a few hundred people and there were no guns or gun stores. They also made use of shotguns and cannons to hunt game. However, despite all these precautions, on October 14, 1911, a group of gunmen established themselves in West University Place and began shooting at anyone who got in their way. One man died as a result of the gunfire and several others were injured. The gunmen then took hostages before fleeing the area in a car. The incident became known as the Gunfight at West University Place and left many residents scared for their safety. It has been said that this event is one of the earliest examples of gun violence in Texas and is still remembered today as an example of why firearms should not be used lightly when it comes to protection against crime.

At its peak during World War II there were over 20 businesses in operation within the limits of what is now Downtown West University Place including banks, insurance companies, grocery stores and other small businesses that generated jobs for local residents while providing goods and services necessary for life outside of war-time shortages. The first settlement in what is now West University Place was made in 1848 when a group of men and women under the leadership of Captain John F. Smith set up a homestead on the site of present day Baylor University. The original town was named Prairie View after a nearby prairie. As the community grew, it became necessary to establish schools and other amenities such as churches, stores, and residences. In 1869, Baylor University became West Texas Agricultural College and in 1932 it became Texas State University. Today, West University Place is home to many Universities including Baylor University, Texas A&M Aggie School of Medicine, Texas Southern Methodist University, SMU Mustangs football team and Texas Lutheran Men’s Basketball team.
West University Place was a major thoroughfare in Austin, Texas. It ran from the east side of the city to the west side, and its name is derived from West University Avenue which it runs concurrent with. The street first appeared on maps as early as 1847. The original courthouse on West University Place was built in 1851 and served as the county seat for Travis County until November 15, 1855 when Austin became a separate municipality. The courthouse burned down in 1889, but was replaced by a new courthouse located at 2102 W. Anderson Drive which still stands today.
