West University Place is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 24,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The land where West University Place now stands was won by Colonel John Fayette Potter in 1836 as part of the cession of Mexico to the United States. He built what would become the first permanent settler's home on what became known as Potter Ranch. Potter opened his ranch office and store there in 1837 and developed it into a cattle market and town center that served as a key transportation hub for settlers moving westward from central Texas. By 1840, many residents had moved to West University Place from eastern Dallas County due to itsmarketspace and easy access to railroad lines traveling east-west through Dallas County. In 1849, Fort Worth was founded as the capital of Texas and West University Place became its second largest city after Austin. In 1870, when westernDallasCountywasdividedintonorthandsouthitbecame apparentthatthecityofWestUniversityPlacewouldnotfitinwitheitherregion. So instead, Mayor James Murtagh recommended that Houston be chosen as the new county seat because it had more cotton plantations than any other county in Texas."HoustonChambers"approvedthe proposal and so Houston took over West University Place while Fort Worth continued to serve as its second city government

It is a one-story wood frame structure with clapboard exterior walls and granite foundation . It has been renovated several times but retains its original appearance .
