West University Place is a census-designated place in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. West University Place was founded in 1887 by banker and landowner J.D. McClure as West University Heights. The original town square was located on what is now Pinecrest Road and it included buildings that still stand today including the Methodist Episcopal Church and the old post office building. McClure renamed his new town after himself, WUHP (later West University Place). In 1912, McClure donated of land to build Baylor University's first campus on the site of what is now Baylor College of Medicine Annex Building #2. The first buildings on campus were erected with funds from McClure and Baylor President James Dickey. With Baylor's addition to Baylor Univ., WUHP became an official college town with its own governance and social life within a larger university community. West University Place is a small city in Hays County, Texas, located on the east side of the Brazos River. The city was founded in 1881 by citizens of Fort Worth and its current name is honors West University, which opened in 1876 as the Texas A&M Agricultural College. The original town site was on land that today includes much of downtown Houston. The first school in the area was the Houston School for Boys, established in 1872 by contractor John Kirby. In 1875, James M. Kountz donated land to create what would become West University Place. The first school building was built on Central Avenue and it served as a day-school until1892 when it became an agricultural college. In 1902, Baylor College acquired land adjoining West University Place and formed Baylor–West University Place College with four campuses: North Campus (later renamed Baylor), South Campus (later renamed UTSA), East Campus (later named Sam Houston State) and Western Campus (now known as Rice). In 1927, Baylor–West University Place became part of the new UTEP system when that university gained university status from Texas A&M. That same year, WUPL discontinued operations at its North Campus campus and moved to UTEP'sSouth Campus campus for all academic purposes. In 1951, WUPL reopened at its original Northcampus location after being rebuilt from scratch using non-traditional methods including use of recycled materials and energy conservation practices unique to then-new universities such as UTEP. In 1998 WUPL completed a $50 million renovation which included new science labs and Athletics venues along with expanding dining options for students and faculty members across both campuses
