West University Place is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area. The site that would become West University Place was first settled by families from Louisiana in the 1840s. The land that now forms West University Place was donated to Harris County by George Wirtemberg in 1884 as part of his plan for creating an agricultural district around Houston. The first buildings on what would become West University Place were built between 1888 and 1889 as a result of a grant from the sugar industry. In 1902, the Houston Board of Education voted to name the new city after former president James K. Polk (1845-1925). At its peak, West University Place had a population of over 100,000 people and was home to many businesses and organizations such as Baylor College of Medicine and Rice Institute of Technology. However, during World War II most of the town's residents converged at nearby Clear Lake Naval Air Station which supported military aircraft production activities across several thousand acres southwest of town. In 1948, following passage of Senate Bill 5555 which provided for racial segregation in public education within Texas schools based on race, white students began to move out westward fromHouston while black students moved into neighboring Clear Lake Naval Air Station townships west of downtown Houston.
