West University Place in Dallas, Texas was once a major shopping and business center. The area now known as WestUniversity Place was developed in the early 1800s as a cotton plantation. The original owner of the land, James C. Bowie, purchased it from the Aboriginal people who lived there before that. He used it to grow cotton and then sold it off to other farmers. By 1853, Bowie had built a large store on the site which he called "The Gateway." The store became one of Dallas's largest and most prosperous businesses. In 1892, Bowie merged with his brother-in-law John Witherspoon to form Bowie & Witherspoon Company Limited. They continued to operate their business until 1959 when they merged with Texaco Corporation.
