West University Place is a city in the U.S. state of Texas, located on the border of Houston and Richardson. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area and had a population of 106,362 as of 2017. West University Place is a historic town in Collin County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. It was founded by settlers from Illinois in 1867 and became a ghost town after the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. The first settler in West University Place was John White who arrived in 1867. He built a log cabin on the north side of Town Creek, about one mile east of present-day West University Place. The first school opened in 1868 and was operated by Indians for four years before being taken over by white students. A two-story school building with a bell tower and metal roof was built on what is now the west side of Main Street just south of US 75 between 1865 and 1870. In 1870, another two-story school building was erected on what is now Elm Street west of US 75; this building served as both schools until it burned down in 1902. In 1872, voters approved an ordinance to name the town "West University Place" to distinguish it from other towns near Austin that were named "University". The town plat was filed with the Texas State Register on May 1, 1874 and published on July 22nd that year. On November 12th,1876, West University Place had its first election as a village with a population of 7 residents; 5 men and 3 women voted for incorporation into the Village School District #2 which included present day Northside Elementary School (later Northside Middle/High School) located adjacent to IH 35E exit 204A off FM 620N eastbound lanes; this area served as reference point for voting boundaries until 1959 when they were changed to include all OFD #2 territory within their limits). In 1890 City Council designated five lots along Elm Street north of US 75 as part of an expansion project for the city limits; these lots formed what is today Elmwood Cemetery which extended back to current day FM 620W between Waco Road and Spurlock Boulevard (Alamo Heights Drive). In 1898 construction began on what would become South Lamar High School which replaced older high schools across downtown Austin including First Baptist Church (now Barton Springs Pool), Trinity Episcopal Cathedral (now Barton Springs Hotel), Alamo Hall (now demolished) and Hermitage House which served as home for several governors during Reconstruction era including James Kenedy (1887–1889), William Hogg (1892–1901), Ross Perot (1992–1994) and Ann Richards (1988–1990). In 1907 Mayor David Ellington dedicated new streetscape improvements outside Old Main Gate located east ofcurrent day MLK Drive & Pecan Road (& concurrent Old Main Gate Rd.) Improvements included paving sidewalks & renamed streets around main thoroughfare namesakes such as Elm St., Trinity Ave., Houston St., Dallas St etc.; new trees were planted throughout street improvement project also plaque reading "David Ellington - Mayor 1909 – 1912" currently resides at corner where Streets Meet Commissioners Row used to be
West University Place in Austin, Texas was founded on November 16, 1875, by Dr. John W. Lloyd and James M. Caldwell as the first day-care center in Austin. The center was renamed West University Place School of Nursing in 1912 after the university's first dean of nurses, Mrs. Sarah Mason Westfall. In 1916, West University Place became the first school in Austin to offer instruction in Business Administration and it remains one of only a few business schools in Texas today that offers such training.
