West University Place is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,532 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The city was founded on October 1, 1879 by John Pemberton and his brothers-in-law Jesse Wacoal and James Hancey as West University Place & Dodge City. On October 3, 1881 the name of the town was changed to West University after President Andrew Johnson's speech in which he announced that all east Texas land west of US 90 would be given to the university for its education purposes. The townsite lay along what is now Main Street in downtown Waco. In 1922 it annexed Cedar Hill and in 1932 it annexed Commerce Heights. In 1925 Waco’s first high school opened; Lamar High School followed in 1929 (accomplished by an addition of a gymnasium). In 1935 Waco completed construction of Baylor Methodist College on East Rice Avenue near Main Street; this became Baylor–Waco Institute of Technology (now Baylor University). The university closed its doors for good on September 15, 1946 due to low enrollment but reopened two months later with new administration and faculty following World War II service as part of the United StatesArmy Air Forces Returned Home Command during which time many students from across America studied at Baylor under Army leadership including future Presidents Dwight D Eisenhower and Richard Nixon. After years of decline starting with World War II fewer students attended BJIC until 1978 when state funding shifted from public higher education institutions to community colleges statewide resulting in increased enrollment at BJIC as well as growth adjacent to main campus creating what today is known as “the heart” or “campus” portion of Waco Hills located beyond Main Street off I-35E just south of Interstate 10
West University Place was the original site of the Texas A&M Aggies football team. The university moved to its current location on this campus in 1876.
