West University Place (WUP) is a city in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area. The population was 24,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. WUP has been in existence since 1881 as an agricultural town on the edge of what is now downtownDallas. In 1881, J.P. Morgan and his partners James A. Hogg and William Troup bought 2,000 acres (800 ha) of land east of downtownDallas for $2 per acre ($10 million at today's prices). They named their new township "West University Place". In 1889 they also donated 1,500 feet (460 m) of main street to be called Main Street East in honor of J.P.'s father Philadelphia Morgan Sr., one of Dallas's first citizens and a director on its first board of directors. The townsite contained 17 buildings when it was platted - six stores, four homes, one hotel and twelve schools - but by 1901 only three stores remained open: The Store at Eighth & Main Streets had closed by then; Secondhand Fairs had replaced it; and Pecan Junction Mills had taken over from Firsthand Fairs as the town's largest employer. They added new streets and buildings to help with traffic congestion and provide more space for businesses. They also built a gymnasium in order to promote physical education within their community. Eventually, due to all these changes and improvements done by the residents at West University Place, the city became an important center for business and culture in central Texas. The first white settler in what is now West University Place was James Fenton, who founded a mercantile business there in 1836. The town name of West University Place was derived from the fact that it lay on the west bank of the Brazos River.
