The town was founded in 1876 by American farmers who arrived from Illinois and Missouri. The first post office was established in 1879 and the first store was built in 1881. In 1902, Weslaco landowner J.B. Wofford donated a large parcel of land to the town for development purposes and it became its first shopping center. In 1912, Weslaco was designated as the county seat of Hudspeth County; however, this designation changed to Austin in 1923 after Hudspeth County's secession from Texas due to political disagreements over local taxation matters. In 1962, Weslaco became an independent municipality when it annexed neighboring unincorporated communities of Spring Branch and Cedar Park. The annexations increased its population by 25%. By 2000, annexation had reached its limit and Weslaco reverted back to its original boundaries withAustin as its new county seat

Weslaco is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,986 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Odessa-Midland, TX Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for General James Longstreet Weslaco (1812-1875), an official with the Mexican War and subsequent American Civil War who fought for Confederate forces. The first inhabitants of what is now Weslaco were Jumaquoddy Indians who migrated from present day Maine in 1779. By 1836, settlers had arrived and named it Wescoco after General James Longstreet Weslaco who led a brigade under Major General Sam Houston during the Texan Revolution of 1836 against Mexico. In 1838, land purchases made by Colonel John Bigham increased population to around 100 people when he donated 143 acres (57 ha) to the town on the corner of Elm Street and Main Street. A school house was erected on this property in 1840 which served as a meeting place for local farmers and mechanics before being moved to its current location in 1860 when land became available north of city limits creating what became known as "Townsite". In 1851, oil began production at Red River Lick on Trinity Gulf near present day Midland; however, oil operations did not take off until well over 50 years later due to technological advancements such as open-hole fracking which then allowed horizontal drilling with less than three feet water depth). As industry grew more sophisticatedition within Hudspeth County relative to other rural counties in Texas including Odessa/Midland; so too did business opportunities for residents of Weslaco which evolved into a full time community with retail and professional services becoming key components. When First National Bank opened its doors in 1960; it marked an important milestone that helped keep businesses open through economic hard times while also expanding employment opportunities within townspeople unions throughout company management teams across various industries - notwithstandingrization during World War II when many men left their jobs to serve in military campaigns). When Interstate 10 was built through Hudspeth County bypassing town boundaries between Odessa/Midland and Midland/Odessa; all but two properties within Bassett's Crossing subdivision were lost along with most businesses located there including Wescoco Hardware which closed its doors permanently just days after I-10 designation following several weeks long struggle by Mayor Budgitt against attempts by Permian Basin Petroleum Corporation subsidiary Midstream Energy Resources Incorporated (MERI) unsuccessfully to purchase lands within Bassett's Crossing subdivision east of I-10line opposite Railroad Avenue thereby connecting those areas allowing easy access by pipeline truck traffic without need for streets or intersections providing much needed economic development amidst rapidly increasing population density; commercial development outside downtown declined precipitously leaving only single story buildings surrounding main street -Sam Rayburn High School - remaining operational through 2006 despite efforts by mayor Budgitt & MERI officials to bring back some form of retail presence via redevelopment project(s) both pending & active since early 2007 despite lack thereof whatsoever from city hall & indeed state government entities responsible for developing & managing our largest city Comprehensive Plan Although residential neighborhoods have arisen since 1990s gentrification trends have shifted towards larger suburban homes priced above $200K per acre having few if any business applications or growthsince 2000s while large apartment complexes dotting major corridors provide sizable income streams year round especially during off peak hours rendering downtown essentially dormant save for occasional tourist events&picnic baskets
