Weslaco, Texas is a small town founded in 1887, located on the banks of the Sabine River. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had served as its first mayor. After annexation by Austin in 1876, Weslaco became an important commercial and military center due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers. In 1915, Weslaco was renamed San Antonio and became one of the largest cities in Texas. It has since declined in importance but retains a significant amount of history thanks to its numerous museum and historical sites. One of the most important historical sites in Weslaco is the old San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. This park preserves two historic missions - La Purísima ConcepciónMission (the second-largest mission complex in California) and Obispo de TesoroMission (the original Spanishate mission). The missions are also home to several interesting museums including Mission San Fernando Rey de las AmericasNational Historic Site, which contains artifacts from Mexican colonial period; Mission Santa Anna National Historical Park, which contains artifacts from U.S.-Mexican War era; and Mission Santiago National Historical Park, which contains artifacts from Spanish Colonial period. Another significant site is Alamo House Museum Complex located just off Interstate 10 near downtown Weslaco. This museum features exhibits about life at the Alamo during revolutionary times as well as later years when it served as a prison and target for assassination attempts by Texans following the Mexican-American War. After the war ended came economic prosperity with increased manufacturing activity; however,.the 1990s were difficult for Weslaco with high unemployment rates and expanding suburban development coming to town; however recent efforts have led to some resurgence in local economy with improvements in education and job opportunities
