The post served as an impediment to Mexican trade and also acted as a check on Mexican immigration into Texas. In 1855, when President Buchanan designated Texas as part of America during the American Revolution, fortifications were erected at Weslaco in order to protect the settlements within its boundaries from any potential Invasion by Mexico. Additionally, it is said that cannons were stored at this post in case of an actual invasion by Mexico. When America merged with Mexico following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1847, service at the military post ended and all cannons were removed from site. However, Fort Worth continuedconstructing artillery batteries along its western border until 1865 when they moved eastward towards Dallas In 1869-1870 another military installation was erected near present day Weslaco which functioned as a depot for goods being transported between Galveston and Chicago while also serving as a base for troops engaged in operations against lawlessness throughout central Texas In 1907-1908 a hospital was built adjacent to Fort Worth State School which served general population during World War I while also accommodating military patients In 1925-1926 another hospital was constructed adjacent to Fort Worth State School which served general population during World War II In 1949-1950 another hospital was constructed adjacent to Fort Worth State School which served general population during both World Wars Today there are no hospitals located within proximity ofFort Worth State School
Weslaco, Texas is a town in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,251 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. The name Weslaco comes from the Choctaw words "wesa" meaning "place where game is hunted" and "Laco" meaning "a river in Mexico". The first white settlers in what became Medina County were John Wesley Powell and his party who explored the upper Rio Grande in 1869. They named their new settlement rancho de la Bahia (the bay). The railroad arrived in 1870 and by 1871 there were three tracks through the community; one served as an interchange for trains coming from Lubbock, Texas and El Paso, Colorado. In 1872 a post office was established at Weslaco with Wm H Marsh as its firstpostmaster. A sod house was built near present day US 287 to serve as the first schoolhouse which taught children until it burned down in 1905. In 1876 local farmer George Mize donated land on which a cotton gin would be built; this started Brownsville-Weslaco Cotton Gin Company Limited which produced cotton until 1954 when it closed because of lack of demand. A smallpox outbreak in 1886 caused many people to leave Weslaco for fear of catching the disease but within two years all had recovered. On Feb 8th 1889 – just over 25 years after they founded the town – Methodists led by Rev J F Stephenson held their first services here at Methodist Hall across from present day US 287/288 Streets NW from Main StreetNW In 1907–08 construction began on what would become known as “The Wall” or “The School House Square” also known locally for its large blacksmith shop adjoining Main Street NW which provided employment for many locals during that time frame including future Mayor Fred Durstmann Sr In 1915 Bethlehem Steel built a plant south of town on property now used by ICE creamery) On Dec 7th 1924 Dr James Beasley Bornstein opened his dental practice at 6055 FM 1960 about one mile east of town on current US 281 north of IH 10thus becoming only second dentist west of Dallas after Harry Wexler In 1951 both stations KERA & KRLD moved to downtown Dallas following FCC rule change allowing radio stations to be located inside larger cities without prior consent from city planners
