Weslaco is a town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. The name Weslaco comes from the Wichita Indian word "wessaloc" meaning "place of refuge." Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church and Wesleyan Presbyterian Church are both located in Weslaco. The first post office for Weslaco was established in 1873. It served as the seat of Hudspeth County until 1886 when it was moved to Texarkana. In 1907, the county seat was moved back to Weslaco and remains so today. The spring runnels which flow through the town were discovered by pioneer settlers in 1876 and named after Professor Jameson Wesley (1821-1892), who did groundbreaking work on them during his tenure as professor of geology at Lamar University in Austin. In 1881, Jameson's son John Wesley founded the local oil company, J W Wesley Oil Company Limited which still operates out of Weslaco today. Johannah married John Wesley's grandson David Perrin early in 1903 and they raised their children there until his death three years later. Weslaco was founded in 1836 by Captain David Bayles and his wife, who named the town after their brother-in-law, Wes Lacy. The first post office was established in 1837. The town quickly grew and became a center for ranching and timber production. In the early 1900s, Weslaco became a major shipping point for agricultural products headed to Mexico City. By World War I, the town had become an important military base as it served as a staging ground for American forces fighting in Europe. During World War II, Weslaco was home to thousands of troops stationed across Texas and Mexico. After the war, Weslaco experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as an industrial center. In the late 1990s and 2000s, however, the town went through several rounds of financial trouble that led to its decline. Today, Weslaco is primarily known for its rich history and cultural attractions.
