The town of Weslaco, Texas was founded by Anglo-American settlers in 1859. The town's first post office opened in 1871. In 1915, the name of the town was changed to Wilshire Heights in honor of its new mayor, Harry S. Wilshire.
Weslaco is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hudspeth County. The first permanent settler in what is now Weslaco was John Wesley Hardin on November 5, 1846. He named the town after General Sam Houston's home state of Georgia. The first post office was established in 1849 and was called "Houston". A new courthouse and jail were built in 1851; both are still standing today. Weslaco became a city on March 20, 1907 when it annexed the Village of Lubbock (now part of Midland). In 1911, an act by the Texas Legislature authorized annexation of all unincorporated areas within Hudspeth County east of FM 620 along the Arkansas River to make up for low levels of tax collection there from those citizens who had chosen not to incorporate as cities or towns. Weslaco incorporation came about on February 4 that year when voters approved non-binding resolutions asking for city status because they saw it as an opportunity to improve their economy and get more money from the county government for infrastructure improvements such as road and sewer construction projects. The city charter was ratified on March 20 by vote of City Council members with only two abstentions. The original name for Weslaco may have been "Washington" but this name has been challenged by several residents who feel that Washington would have sounded too much like Oklahoma Territory's governor George Wallace while also being difficult to pronounce locally with a high school education like most people hereabouts (note: although I am an expert on Texan surnames - so if I'm wrong please let me know). In any case, Washington became just "Weslaco" after incorporation which made it easier to remember since no one ever changed their name once they got incorporated into the city limits! In 1917 City Manager L C Redmond decided to change all street numbers starting with 2 through 9 from westward (2nd Street → 4th Street → 6th Street → 8th Street → 10thStreet) because he felt that number order helped motoristsremember where they were located relative to other places within town limits - something that many Texans found helpful during those early days before satellite navigation systems and maps became availableand comprehensive topographic mapping became possible! After annexation into Hudspeth County in 1911 some streets east of FM 620 were renamed according to counties boundaries instead of alphabetically like they had been prior to then - eg 2nd Avenue in Buchanan County became 3rd Avenue in Dallas County etc... This policy continued until 1957 when all street names withinCity Limits reverted back alphabetically again!!

Weslaco is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town dates back to the 1840s when settlers first arrived in Hudspeth County. By 1851, Weslaco had a store and post office. In 1907, the community name was changed to Weslaco after Wesley Ladd, who donated land for a community center and used his money to help finance school buses for the community. In 1951, Weslaco experienced its first tornado strike when an EF3 tornado touched down in the town on October 25th. Since that time there have been several other tornadoes that struck Weslaco including an EF5 on December 3rd of that year and an EF4 on February 14th of 2013 which caused some damage and one death. Today, Weslaco remains a small but vibrant community with strong ties to its history and people. The local businesses offer unique products and services not found in most towns of its size across Texas or even America. Visitors can find locally-made jams, jellies, pies and more at many local farmers markets during Farmers' Market Weekend each summer; as well as interesting historical items such as pottery from early 1900s pioneer settlement in what is now Weslaco; plus beautiful handcrafted objects from various cultures throughout Central America at Fiesta Mexicana Museum & Arts District every week during Mexican Heritage Month (November-December).
The town of Weslaco was founded by Manuel Martinez in 1884. It was named for the Spanish word "Weslaco" meaning "place where wheat is grown." The first store in the town was built on what is now McAllister Avenue. The first school opened in 1889. In 1916, the first post office opened in Weslaco. In 1936, the name of the town was changed to Weslaco, Texas after its incorporation into the Mexican state of Veracruz.
