Weslaco is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,381 at the 2010 census[1] and 1,521 at the 2013 estimate. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The townsite was located on the banks of the San Jacinto River. In 1836, General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army destroyed an encampment of Texans living east of New Braunfels and named the site Weslaco after then-Governor James Fannin.[2] A post office called Weslaco was established in 1841,[3] and it remained in operation until 1907. In 1898, John Wesley Powell visited Hudspeth County while he was exploring Colorado Territory; he named a stream nearby "Wesley" after Wesley Smith (1809-1892), one of his subordinates on this trip. The first settlement in what is now Weslaco was founded by John Neely Bryan and family on December 12, 1901: they named it Prospect Heights after their home prospecting near Goose Creek Valley Railroad Station in Eagle Ford Township west of modern day Weslaco. By 1908 there were only nineteen residents living in Prospect Heights; by 1913 there were over three hundred residents living there. The community experienced rapid growth during World War I when many soldiers brought their families to live with them; during World War II many businesses closed due to lack of war production availability but new ones sprang up as war materiel became available again. By 1960 most residents had left for good but some remain until today as property owners or retirees along US 183 adjacent to FM 620.[4][5]

Weslaco, Texas is a small town located in Medina County, Texas. The population was 586 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Medina County. The name Weslaco comes from the Choctaw word "welaco" meaning a place to hunt or gather wild game. The first settlers in what is now Weslaco arrived in 1836 and named it Wacoco after their home state of Louisiana. In 1881, the name was changed to Medina due to confusion with another small town nearby, Waco, Texas. The first businesses in Weslaco were cattle and haying operations that operated until about 1915. In 1919, an oil well was found on land adjacent to present day Weslaco and some initial exploration began soon thereafter. By 1923, wells had been drilled and production commenced; however, there was limited commercial success as oil prices declined during this time period. Development recommenced around 1938 when an electric power plant was built near present day Weslaco for use by local farmers who grew corn and other crops on surrounding land. However, economic conditions prior to World War II prevented any significant development until after the war when oil prices resumed their upswing and new construction began which included a hotel/motel complex (now known as the Comfort Inn), two shopping malls (oneanchored by Sears & Roebuck) as well as several industrial parks including one now occupied by Koppers Electronics Company Incorporated The economy has since slumped with subsequent job loss accompanying lower commodity prices resulting from difficult times throughout much of 2000s through 2010s due primarily to global recession exacerbated by Texan drought conditions In recent years some private investment has restored some vitality but there remains much work that needs to be done before Wesleyan can become self-sufficient As of 2010*, Wesleyan had about $4 million in available coffers for growth both within its own community as well as beyond it providing opportunities for collaboration with partners across Medina County such as new businesses formed through cluster programming or startup accelerator programs like Creative Mornings or Campus Ventures Open Center which assembles entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds each weeknight over breakfast
