Weslaco, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 30,591 at the 2010 census and is the second most populous city in Travis County after Austin. It is also the most populous municipality in Travis County, with a population of 43,972 as of 2015. The first gun sights were built in Weslaco by George Athey and his son-in-law Elisha Sikes around 1814. Gun sights began becoming popularized during the American Revolution due to their use by British soldiers to avoid being flanked by cannon fire from behind while marching through enemy territory. The history of Weslaco can be traced back to 1881 when it was established as a cattle station on the banks of Buffalo Bayou by W. H. “Hap” Arnold and his brother-in-law John Pritchard. In 1907, Weslaco became the capital of Midland County and was designated as the county seat in 1912. It has since been renamed several times including Weslaco City in 1969; Weslaco Airport in 1990; and finally its current name, which it adopted in 2007 after being given city status by then-Mayor Annise Parker. According to the 2010 census, 3% of Weslaco's population were African Americans, making it one of the few townships within Houston that does not have any black residents over 20%. In 2009 homicide rates for Midland County were 5 per 100,000 population compared to Houston's rate of 17 per 100,000 population according to FBI data from 2006 through 2009. This disparity may be due in part to living within easy commuting distance fromHouston while also having more diversity with regards to social organizations among African Americans within Weslaco than most areas in Houston

The name change to Weslaco on October 11, 1896 when the line between Starr and Travis Counties was updated. In 1907 a schoolhouse and store were built in what is now Weslaco; this building still stands today as a museum known as the Wesleylem Weslaco School Museum (Wes-Loco). A telephone company operated out of an old mill in downtown Weslaco from 1907 until 1915 when it became part of AT&T Corporation's efforts to build more reliable phone service throughout the area In 1916 an oil well was discovered near present day Wes-Loco and production began soon thereafter; however, due to high costs associated with drilling and such operations, oil production ceased within a few years. However local residents continued to produce their own gasoline until 1947 when gasoline rationing began in America following World War II which led many people to switch over to use kerosene for heating/cooling purposes In 1951 an all-night movie theater opened up in downtown Wes-Loco which soon became one of the most popular entertainment options for locals during those days On August 29th 1969 Hurricane Ike struck southern Starr County causing extensive damage including numerous homes destroyed or damaged along with loss of life including that of John Wesleylem Weslcao who perished while attempting to rebuild his home Later that year on December 15th 1969 another devastating hurricane named Jeanne made landfall just south of town and caused even more destruction including revocation of property rights within limits set by state law governing development within certain areas affected by hurricanes
Weslaco was founded in 1877 by John Wesley Long and is the oldest town in Texas. The area became a cattle ranching center after Discovery Ranch was established in 1879. In 1916, Weslaco was incorporated as a city.
