Weslaco is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1879 by John A. Weslaco and his wife Anna Loring Weslaco as a trading post on the Brazos River. The name of the post came from Spanish words meaning "water limit." A sawmill and grist mill were built in 1885 and 1886, respectively, and soon afterwards a store and restaurant opened. In 1909, a school was built on land donated by William Halsey Smith Sr., founder of Smith's Bazaar grocery store in Austin. In 1920, the first oil well was drilled in Hudspeth County; it produced gas but no oil. In 1930, an electric plant was built to power local businesses; it became operational known as the Weslaco Electric Company (WE). In 1948, WE merged with Texaco Oil to form Texaco-Wesco (later ChevronTexaco). During World War II, when other industries closed down due to wartime production quotas set by US military planners, Weslaco remained open as an aircraft engine manufacturing center for Bell Aircraft Corporation products that were shipped from nearby Midland Airport (now Midland International Airport) via train to Wichita Falls National Military Park near Dallas-Fort Worth Airport for assembly into bombers or fighters during those years when Wichita Falls had more than one airport serving its citizens only three times per day! After World War II ended there continuedto be heavy industry using local resources until about 1970 when all but two factories closed because of technological advances which could not be supported by traditional economic activities like mining or ranching anymore

Weslaco's name comes from Spanish for "little wood". The Town of Weslaco was organized on November 3, 1894 when farmers and ranch hands from various parts of Hudspeth County met at the home of Elisha Winchester to discuss joining forces to form a town. On December 5th, 1894 the first meeting of the town council took place and decided that the name should be changed to Weslaco after its original namesake which they found while exploring a piece of land lying east-southeast of present day Weslaco. On January 6th 1895, Mayor John Pemberton unveiled a model city charter which outlined how the town would function. The cornerstone for City Hall was laid on February 6th 1895 by Mrs. Lillie Hagedorn with assistance from Mr. Murchison who donated $1,000 towards the project. The first council meeting ever held in Wesleyloco took place on March 4th 1895 with Wm J Fenton as mayor and six other members including James A McConnell as clerk and treasurer; all were elected without pay due to lack of voting power at that time. The first public auction for lots within Wesleyloco took place on May 1st 1895 with bids totaling $2 per lot Metro Land Company officials awarded lot #8 for just $10 giving rise to great excitement among community leaders! In addition to providing economic development opportunities and creating jobs many local businesses such as The Keg House Brewery & Grill opened their doors during this time period including The Methodist Church (now First Baptist), Driscoll’s grocery store (now Sam’s Club) and most importantly White restaurant (later known as Longhorn Steakhouse). In 1907 president Theodore Roosevelt visited Wesleyloco while on his way to visit Cedar Park Reservoir where he had dinner at Chateau Laurant followed by a concert at Cedar Park Gardens before returning home via Austin Municipal Airport leaving behind an empty stomach! This marks one of only two governors in American history who traveled directly into downtown Austin without stopping off in towns along their route! Mayor John Pemberton was succeeded by JF Ellison in 1912 but continued serving until 1915 when he became governor pro tempore under Woodrow Wilson effective October 15th 1913 until his death eleven days later due complications related to appendicitis suffered during office hours aboard USS Constitution moored off Austin Navy Pier after attending Wilson’s inauguration ceremonies! During Mayor Ellison’s term there were also special events such as Corpus Christi Day celebration – April 14th 1915 Celebration featuring live music from Joe Smith Band headlined by Tex Ritter attended by Governor George Romney and hundred or so citizens with refreshments being served throughout Military Post barracks located adjacent parkland today known as Moore Square . Unfortunately not all activity enjoyed by local citizens occurred within municipality boundaries especially when it came to law enforcement which saw an increase in corruption during this time period leading Attorney General Harry B Keane take up matters in 1916 making Weslaco one of only two cities in Texas Municipalities Act legislation passed that year resulting legalized gambling within limits set forth therein! Following World War I service men returned homeMoved away several times never really settling down landed back near property now called West Side Road then west side main street now south side road
