Weslaco is a small town in Cameron County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name Weslaco comes from Spanish meaning "western ranch." The community was founded in 1884 by Scots-Irish immigrants who had come to the area as cattle farmers. In 1923, the community became part of Lubbock. As Lubbock grew and annexed more territory, Weslaco shrunk in size until it reached its current size of 1,812 residents in 2000. Today, many businesses in Weslaco are related to agriculture or petrochemicals. There are also a few restaurants and small businesses that have survived long enough to be considered locally owned and operated entities. It is also home to two high schools - Weslaco High School and Westwood Independent High School - as well as several churches including First Baptist Church of Weslaco (established 1888) and Christ Lutheran Church (established 1906).

Weslaco is a town in Starr County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,690 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Weslaco were Adobe and Mission Americans who came from San Antonio in 1836. Adobe was the first white settlement in Starr County and it served as a trading post for years until it burned down in 1849. Wesley College was founded here by Methodist missionaries in 1851 and became one of the leading universities in Texas. In 1865, General John Pemberton established headquarters for his Union army at nearby Round Rock (later Austin) and Wesley College moved to that location along with other military installations including Fort Sam Houston which became known as "The Alamo" after its fall in1867. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location on Stagecoach Road about two miles east of the Mexican border - an important transportation artery during the period when Texans traveled between San Antonio and Mexico City. The name "Wesley" derived from John Wesley's Epiphany Chapel on Wilson Street near present-day Weslaco Boulevard where he delivered his famous sermon on July 16, 1763. In 1881, the Dallas-based Central Pacific Railroad built a line through Weslaco connecting it with Dallas and other parts of Texas; this helped begin Weslaco's growth as a commercial center despite being bypassed by Highway 290 which ran parallel to the railroad right-of-way. In 1925, the townspeople organized their own school district which led to development of schools such as Baylor University (now Baylor School of Medicine), Rice University (now Rice University School of Physical Therapy), Southwestern Methodist University (now Southwest Baptist Theological Seminary), Southern Methodist University (now SMU) among others around today's downtown area including various shopping malls serving local residents as well as several professional institutions such as law enforcement agencies and health care providers' clinics/practice sites within easy walking distance like Dell Medical Center & Research Institute(Dell HealthCare Campus). This rapid growth continued into recent decades with major developments such as Hobby Lobby Stores located adjacent to downtown across Highways 290/290A making it possible for small businesses owners throughout much Of central Texas access high quality healthcare without leaving their doorstep without breaking sweat or facing long lines at pharmacies or health insurance offices etc.; restaurants like Longhorn Steak House(Longhorn BBQ Company), Café Garcia(Café Garcia Mexican restaurant) along withumerable small convenience stores dotting most central streets providing high end gourmet food choices similar to what you would find outside larger chain restaurants while keeping prices affordable so everyone can enjoy good quality foods regardless economic conditions etc., creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurialism and creativity which has characteristically contributed significantly To contemporaneous advances both culturally AND technologically throughout much OFcentral TX
Weslaco was founded by Anglo-Texan pioneers in 1836. The town grew rapidly and soon became a transportation, banking and industrial center. In the 1840s, the town built its first school, post office and warehouse. By 1850, Weslaco had a population of over 1,000 people. It continued to grow throughout the late 1800s into the 1900s and 2000s as a major cotton port on the Texas Gulf Coast. In recent years, Weslaco has become known for its significant Hispanic community that continues to make a positive impact on its culture and economy.
