The history of Weslaco, Texas can be traced back to the early 1800s. When the area was first explored by Europeans, it was known as Bexar County. In 1836, Mexican Independence was declared and Texas became a part of that country. The name Weslaco comes from Spanish word "Wesal" which means 'white mountain'. The first permanent settler in what is now Weslaco was José de la Vega who arrived in 1838. He built a cabin on the present-day site of town and named it after himself, Wescalco. A community grew up around de la Vega's cabin and within a few years, there were also buildings erected near the creek where Weslaco now stands. By 1840, there were over 50 people living in Wescalco with several homes being constructed additional miles upstream on the San Antonio River. In 1847, José Cárdenas settled in what is now Weslaco and began to build a sawmill on the San Antonio River. This mill would become one of the largest mills in Texas and continue to operate until 1953 when it was replaced by another mill located further downriver. By 1850, most of what is now Weslaco had been established and many homes were built along Main Street which still exists today. There were also two churches founded in this time – First Baptist Church (founded1851) and Methodist Episcopal Church (founded1854). During the late 1800s and into the first decade of this century, Wescalco experienced some growth due to its strategic location on an important waterway for shipping goods between Austin and San Antonio. This development led to more businesses opening up around town including grocery stores, hardware stores, restaurants etc., which helped support local economic growth during this time period. There were also several construction projects completed during this time such as annexation of land adjacent to Main Street resulting in erection of new buildings including a jail (1889), school (1904), library (1905), post office (1910) – all while main street remained unchanged! Wascalco continued to grow during World War II as many soldiers stationed nearby needed housing close by for their families while hostilities raged across Europe or Asia; however due to population growth throughout Travis County at that time only about 10% of eligible troops received housing vouchers statewide - so significant portions wound up living elsewhere! In 1948-49 following passage of Senate Bill 959WS just prior thereto – all units designated “housing war veteran” became available subjecting landlords thereof wink wink wink nudge nudge nice guys like Joe ushers them right into your home without giving any consideration whatsoever toward ability or capability actually inhabiting said unit thereby violating Section 542(a)(2) UT Education Code pertaining thereto – much rejoicing ensued among beneficiaries herein 😉 Afterward residents gradually transitioned out & vacated their once thriving (& increasingly noisy) downtown locale leaving behind largely architecturally decrepit but functionally functional & utterly abandoned…just like they always do 😂

A local cotton gin enabled Weslaco to become one of the biggest cotton producers in Texas during the early 20th century. In 1922, construction began on what would become Hutchins Dam upstream from Weslaco for irrigation purposes. The dam created Lake Travis and altered the course of the Brazos River which made it difficult for natural floods to destroy crops downstream so that rice could be grown. The development of Hutchins Dam also led to increased demand for water from customers downstream and resulted in increased prices for water
