Weslaco is a small town in southeastern Texas, located on the banks of the Rio Grande. The town was founded in 1876 by postmaster John Weslaco and his wife, Anna. In 1907, the name of the town was changed to Fort Worth after Fort Worth became a city in that year. The School District of Weslaco provided instruction for students from kindergarten through twelfth grade from 1916 until its closure in 1983. Instruction resumed in 1984 with the merger of two neighboring school districts. Today, Weslaco offers high school education only though Westside High School which opened in 1988 and is part of the Dallas Independent School District system. Weslaco is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Weslaco was Andrew Waddell in 1836. In 1838, John Wesley Hardin and his family also arrived in what would be Weslaco. A post office called Weslaco was established in 1850, and remained in operation until 1907. The town name may derive from an Indian word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." In 1860, Jeptha Grimes settled on a farm near present-day Weslaco; he named it after General James Wilkinson's brigade that had fought at Bull Run Bridge during the American Civil War. Grimes' farm became one of the best-preserved examples of frontier agriculture remaining in central Texas today. wagon trains carrying goods up to Fort Worth passed through Grimes' land on their way to Wichita Falls or San Antonio; some of these wagons still remain inside the boundaries of modern-day Weslaco. In 1868, Judge Augustus Bogue organized what would become known as Baylor University from Creek Nation lands east of present-day Weslaco; Baylor soon outgrew its original campus and moved to downtown Houston in 1876. A local surveyor named George Higgs surveyed land southeast of present-day Weslaco for Phineas Gage TRANSLATION: An early settler located hereabouts called Gage - possibly after General Nicholas Gage who fought with honor under Washington at Bunker Hill (1775).
