The first European settlers in what is now McLennan County were French Canadians who arrived in 1769 and named their village "Villacoublay." A post office was established there in 1837, and by 1851 the township had a population of twenty-one. In 1857, two brothers, John Fenton and James Fenton, founded the town of Weslaco on the San Antonio River south of modern day Weslaco. The town name came from an early settler's dream to open up country along the river for farming purposes. They named their new community after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna (1788-1846), leader of Mexican forces during the Texan independence struggle against Mexico. In 1863, railroad magnate George Rogers Clark donated land to establish a branch line from Dallas to Abilene so that goods could be shipped directly to Fort Worth without going through Weslaco; this led to increased business for the town and its farmers. By 1870 Weslaco had a population of 553 residents and was one of nineteen townships within McLennan County. That same year it became part of newly created Austin County when all but four of Houston's thirteen counties were created following Houston's incorporation as an independent city in 1836. Weslaco experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction following World War II due to its proximity to military bases and its ability to provide jobs for war veterans returning home from service abroad. The town reached its peakpopulationof10,000 by 1960 but declined thereafter due largely to suburban development around it. However, steady job growth resumed in recent years thanks partly to efforts by Mayor Gilberto Rodriguez Jr., whose administration has worked diligently To keep pace with changes in technology which have made many small towns like Weslaco increasingly irrelevant – including plans for annexation by neighboring Austin if current trends continue
